Genital
Herpes
is a sexually transmitted disease or infection (STD,
STI) caused by a
virus called Herpes Simplex Virus
(HSV). There are two types that cause genital ulcers
but Herpes virus type 2
is much more common. The disease presents as painful ulcerations
on the genitalia, that may last variable periods from a few days
to up to 4 weeks. The first ulcer lasts longer and far more painful
than subsequent ulcers.
| Have
I got the Genital Herpes Virus? |
If
you have a painful shallow genital ulcer there is a chance that
you may indeed have Herpes.
The ulcer may be on the vulva (external parts of the vagina or lips)
or in men may be anywhere on the penis and scrotum.
| How
can I be tested for Herpes? |
If
there is a visible ulcer on your genitalia, vulva or penis, we will
take a swab for viral tests. The results will be available in a
few days.
The approach to treatment depends on the condition of the patient.
During a severe acute attack, the patient with ulcers and pain may
be treated with anti-viral drugs given in the vein or by mouth. In
treating less severe cases of painful ulcers, topical application
of the anti-viral cream may suffice to shorten the duration of the
ulcer. For recurrent genital ulcers, over the counter anti-viral creams
are often used at the earliest sign of onset.
| Where
am I treated for Herpes? |
Once
the condition is confirmed, you will be prescribed an viral treatment
as appropriate. This may include tablets or topical cream.
| What
is cost of the treatment? |
Consultation
and treatment fees are agreed and set between One
Stop Clinics and Insurance companies. If you
are a self paying patient, you will receive a quotation at the outset.
The cost is dependent on the number of visits you may require. There
is a charge for consultations on top of treatment fees. All will
be discussed in detail with you before you undergo any treatment.
